GLOSSARY
CEL ANIMATION
A type of animation that involves using transparent sheet i.e. celluloid on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation.
ECCHI
A usually comedic genre of anime that involves a lot of sexual innuendo and lewd imagery e.g. pantyshots etc.
Often paired with the Harem genre.
FUJOSHI
A female fan of Shounen-ai or Yaoi. Literally translates as 'Rotten Girl'
FUDANSHI
A male fan of Shounen-ai or Yaoi. Literally translates as 'Rotten Boy'
HAREM
A usually comedic genre of anime that involves one lead male character and lots of usually pretty female characters that become the romantic interest of the male lead. The females are usually archetypes.
HENTAI
A genre of anime that primarily depicts pornographic content
LOLI
A prepubescent girl in anime who is depicted as young and cute.
MANGAKA
A person who creates manga
SCREWBALL COMEDY
A type of romantic comedy involving a humorous battle of the sexes that satirises the traditional love story. Often involves witty repartee and farcical situations.
SHOUJO-AI
Lesbian romance i.e female x female, which is also known as Girl's Love (GL).
Usually wholesome as opposed to Yuri
SHOUNEN-AI
Gay romance i.e. male x male, which is also known as Boy's Love (BL).
Usually wholesome as opposed to Yaoi.
SLAPSTICK COMEDY
A style of exaggerated physical comedy that often exceeds the bounds of what is normally physically possible.
Usually involving mishaps, intentional violence and props.
TSUNDERE
A character in anime who switches from being tough and cold towards a love interest into being soft and sweet.
Comes from "tsun-tsun", to turn away in disgust and "dere-dere", to become lovey-dovey.
YAOI
Male x male gay smut. Usually has some explicit scenes and often implies hentai. Yaoi is an acronym from "yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi", which roughly translates to “no climax, no fall, no meaning”
YAOI-BAIT
Content aimed at enticing, exciting or "baiting" fans of shounen-ai or yaoi into thinking there will be possible gay romance when nothing actually ever happens between the characters. Also known as Fujo-bait.
YURI
Female x Female lesbian smut. Usually has some explicit scenes and often implies hentai. The word "yuri" literally translates to "lily", a symbol often associated with lesbian romance.
YURI-BAIT
Content aimed at enticing, exciting or "baiting" fans of shoujo-ai or yuri into thinking there will be possible lesbian romance when nothing actually ever happens between the characters.
